Just make sure to add some additional commentary to your friend request - I tend not to add people I haven't seen before otherwise :)

(Probably the best way is still using the form on the right or calling on the phone since e-mail may get blocked by junk filters that in these days of spam I have tuned up to their extreme, also I'm not checking friend requests on Facebook regularly).
